US military suicide

471 US military suicides in 2024

Washington — The number of suicides in the US military declined in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to new data released by the United States Department of Defense. The report highlights a slight but important improvement in overall figures.

According to the annual report, 471 service members died by suicide in 2024, down from 531 in 2023. The suicide rate per 100,000 personnel also decreased, indicating a positive trend across the armed forces.

Despite the decline, the report revealed that most victims were enlisted males under the age of 30. This group continues to be the most affected, raising concerns about mental health challenges among younger service members.

The data also showed that firearms remained the most common method used in these cases. Officials stressed the importance of addressing access to weapons alongside mental health support efforts.

Out of the total deaths in 2024, 302 individuals were on active duty, 64 were reservists, and 105 were members of the National Guard. Notably, the National Guard was the only group that recorded an increase in suicide rate compared to 2023.

The report also examined suicides among military families. In 2023, 146 family members died by suicide, the same number reported in 2022. This included both spouses and dependents of service members.

Among these cases, 98 were spouses and 48 were dependents. Males accounted for the majority of deaths, representing 65 percent of spouse suicides and 60 percent among dependents. Officials say continued efforts are needed to support both service members and their families.
