Trump warns Iran over energy targets if Hormuz blocked

Washington, March 30, 2026: U.S. President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran are making progress, but warned that Tehran’s vital energy facilities could be targeted if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed. He emphasized that the U.S. prefers a diplomatic resolution but will act militarily if obstruction continues.

Trump posted on Truth Social that the United States is conducting serious negotiations with Iran under a new, more reasonable framework. He added that significant progress has been made and a deal could be reached soon.

He described the talks as guided by careful leadership, aiming for a peaceful solution. Trump expressed hope both sides will reach an agreement promptly to avoid escalation.

However, the president issued a stern warning: if negotiations fail and the Strait of Hormuz is blocked, key Iranian energy infrastructure—including power plants, oil wells, and Kharg Island—could be targeted. He stressed that so far these sites have not been attacked, but action could follow if U.S. personnel are harmed.

Iran responded strongly to Trump’s remarks. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baqai condemned attacks on nuclear facilities as crimes and criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency for failing to denounce the threats. He also clarified that Iran has not held direct talks with the U.S., receiving messages only through intermediaries.
