Indian Foreign Minister J. Shankar faces intense criticism for anti-Pakistan remarks

Indian Foreign Minister J. Shankar is facing strong backlash in India over his recent anti-Pakistan remarks. The comments drew criticism from political opponents and analysts, raising questions about India’s diplomatic approach, especially as Pakistan plays a central role in mediating talks between the US and Iran. The controversy has put the Modi government under pressure for the minister’s undiplomatic statements.

Congress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohammed called Shankar’s remarks a “diplomatic failure,” highlighting that India’s exclusion from Pakistan-Iran negotiations exposes weaknesses in its foreign policy.

Congress leaders Supriya Shrinate and Poonam Khera also criticized India’s inconsistent claims, comparing Shankar’s remarks to India’s previous attempts to mediate the Russia-Ukraine conflict. They questioned India’s credibility as a regional mediator.

Analysts described Shankar’s statement as inappropriate for a foreign minister, labeling it “street language” and inconsistent with India’s prior diplomatic messaging. Experts further noted the comments contradicted India’s April 2022 statements expressing willingness to mediate between Russia and Ukraine. Many observers see the remarks as a defensive response to India’s limited role in the recent Gulf crisis.

The controversy has fueled broader concerns over India’s diplomatic image, challenging its standing as a serious international mediator. Shankar’s comments have sparked debates over India’s ability to maintain credibility and influence in South Asia and beyond. Critics argue such remarks risk undermining India’s soft power and regional engagement efforts.

Meanwhile, international and domestic experts warn that the anti-Pakistan statement could exacerbate tensions in South Asia and highlight gaps in India’s foreign policy communication. The incident underscores the need for more careful and strategic diplomacy from Indian leadership.
