Karachi: The city’s largest wholesale medicine market has resumed operations after being temporarily sealed during a surprise inspection led by Assistant Commissioner Hazim Bhangwar.
The sudden closure caused widespread disruption in the supply of medicines, affecting not only Karachi but also other parts of the country that rely on the market for pharmaceutical distribution. The situation became particularly challenging as the action came immediately after the Eid al-Fitr holidays, when businesses were reopening and restocking supplies.
Traders and shopkeepers expressed strong concerns over the move, stating that no prior notice had been issued before the market was sealed. According to representatives of the market, the timing of the action added to the difficulties, as it coincided with a critical period for replenishing inventory after the holiday break.
Many buyers, including those who had traveled from distant areas, faced inconvenience due to the unexpected closure. Market officials also warned that prolonged disruption could have serious implications for patients dependent on timely access to medicines.
In response to the situation, the Deputy Commissioner South took notice and intervened, ordering the reopening of the market. Authorities resumed operations after obtaining written assurances from traders, confirming their commitment to comply with relevant rules and regulations.
Following the agreement, normal business activities have now restarted, restoring the supply chain of essential medicines.
