PMD issues alert for rain, thunderstorms in Karachi

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast partly cloudy skies in Karachi, with chances of isolated rain and thunderstorms on March 26 and 28. A westerly wave is currently affecting large parts of the country, the PMD said.

Thursday’s forecast predicts maximum temperatures of 30–32°C and minimums of 24°C, with evening humidity around 45–55% and west/southwesterly winds. On Friday, skies will remain partly cloudy, with highs of 31–33°C and lows of 22–24°C, and daytime humidity reaching 80–90%. Winds will shift from northwesterly to west/southwesterly.

Saturday may bring thunderstorms or rain, with temperatures between 30–32°C and lows of 22–24°C, along with 75–85% humidity and west/southwesterly winds. Several districts in Sindh, including Jamshoro, Dadu, Kambar Shahdad Kot, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Sukkur, and Ghotki, are also likely to experience rain and light to moderate thunderstorms.

On March 28–29, additional areas including Hyderabad, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, and Matiari may see rain, wind, thunderstorms, and isolated hail, with occasional breaks in between. The PMD warned that strong winds, hail, and lightning could damage weak structures such as electric poles, billboards, and solar panels.

Authorities also cautioned farmers to protect standing crops from possible hail and wind damage. Last week, a thunderstorm in Karachi claimed 20 lives and injured eight, underscoring the importance of precautionary measures during severe weather.
