Trump calls Iran leaders “very reasonable” amid crisis

President Donald Trump described Iran’s current leadership as “very reasonable” while confirming ongoing direct and indirect talks with Tehran, as Pakistan prepares to host potential negotiations.

The discussions aim to end the month-long Iran war, which has claimed thousands of lives and disrupted global energy supplies. Trump made the comments amid the arrival of additional US troops in the region and warnings from Iran against surrender or humiliation.

The planned talks follow meetings between regional foreign ministers exploring ways to achieve a lasting peace. Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Islamabad would be “honoured to host and facilitate meaningful talks” between Washington and Tehran. It remains unclear whether both sides have formally agreed to participate in the discussions.

Tensions remain high, with Iran’s parliament warning the US against attempts at domination or ground invasion. Meanwhile, Israel has continued its air strikes on central and western Iran, including Tehran, targeting missile launch sites and military facilities.

Iranian state media reported damage to Mehrabad airport, a petrochemical plant in Tabriz, and missile debris hitting southern Israel.

The war has severely affected global energy markets, with Iran’s partial blockade of the Strait of Hormuz driving oil prices higher and fueling inflation concerns worldwide.

Brent crude futures rose above $115 per barrel, while Asian markets, including Japan’s Nikkei index, suffered significant declines. Analysts warn that a prolonged conflict could worsen the global economic outlook.

The US has sent additional troops, including special operations forces and Marines, while military planners continue to consider options for a potential ground operation.

Trump has suggested seizing Kharg Island, Iran’s major oil export hub, which would require a ground invasion. Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis have also joined the conflict, launching attacks on Israel and threatening the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
