Turkey Warns Against New Strait of Hormuz Rules

The Strait of Hormuz tensions have intensified after Turkey expressed concern over proposed new transit regulations being discussed in Iran-US negotiations, warning that such steps could complicate maritime security.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan highlighted that discussions around new rules for passing through the Strait of Hormuz should be handled cautiously and through diplomatic engagement rather than enforcement mechanisms.

The Strait of Hormuz tensions emerged following inconclusive Iran-US talks over the weekend, which failed to produce a final agreement on easing regional conflict and ensuring safe passage through the strategic waterway.

Fidan, who maintains close contact with the United States, Iran, and mediator Pakistan, emphasized that reopening and stabilizing the strait should be achieved through dialogue, not military or external intervention.

He also raised concerns about the idea of an international force overseeing the waterway, noting that such proposals could increase regional friction instead of reducing it.

The Strait of Hormuz tensions are particularly significant because the route is one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, handling a major portion of global oil shipments.

Turkey reiterated its position that diplomacy remains the only sustainable solution, urging all parties involved to avoid actions that could escalate instability in the region.
