In the Southeast Asian country Singapore, even picking up fallen mangoes from the ground or plucking fruit from roadside trees in public areas can result in heavy fines, according to a viral social media claim that has sparked widespread discussion online.
The issue gained attention after a video was shared by Indian-origin digital creator Priyanka Sinha, who showcased a mango tree growing along a roadside. The tree was heavily loaded with fruit, and several mangoes were also seen fallen on the ground beneath it.
Many people assume that fruit growing on roadside or public trees is free for anyone to pick. However, Singapore’s laws treat such trees and their produce differently, as they are considered government property in public spaces.
In her video, Priyanka Sinha explained that under Singapore’s regulations, neither plucking fruit from public trees nor collecting fallen fruit from the ground is allowed. Doing so is considered an offense against public property rules.
She further stated that individuals caught violating this rule could face fines of up to 5,000 Singapore dollars. This is equivalent to over 10 lakh Pakistani rupees, which surprised many viewers online.
Singapore is known globally for its strict laws and high standards of public order. The country enforces regulations related to cleanliness, property protection, and civic discipline to maintain its reputation as one of the cleanest and most organized nations in the world.
After the video went viral, social media users reacted with mixed opinions. Some praised the strict laws for maintaining discipline and cleanliness, while others expressed surprise at how even small actions like picking fallen fruit can lead to significant penalties.
