Pakistan and Canada have agreed to strengthen bilateral relations by reviving trade and investment cooperation during Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s official visit to Islamabad. The discussions reflected a shared commitment to expanding economic ties and enhancing collaboration across multiple sectors.
During her visit to the Prime Minister’s House, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss ways to deepen cooperation between the two countries. The prime minister also witnessed the signing ceremony of the import protocol for Canadian canola, marking another step toward expanding agricultural trade.
Anita Anand also held talks with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. According to a joint statement, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to promoting trade, investment, people-to-people exchanges, and high-level diplomatic engagement. They also agreed to accelerate negotiations on the Foreign Investment Protection and Promotion Agreement.
The two sides further agreed to reactivate the Pakistan-Canada Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment to facilitate stronger commercial partnerships. Officials expressed confidence that renewed dialogue would help unlock new opportunities for businesses and investors in both countries.
The joint statement highlighted plans to increase cooperation in clean energy, mining, agriculture, infrastructure, advanced technology, and environmental protection. Canada also pledged to continue supporting Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts through the United Nations, Interpol, and other international organizations.
In addition, Canada reaffirmed its commitment to supporting development initiatives in Pakistan, including projects focused on education, healthcare, and climate change. Both countries also agreed to continue cooperation on regional peace, Afghanistan, counterterrorism, and coordination at the United Nations and other international forums.
During her visit, Anita Anand also met Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to discuss cooperation against illegal immigration, human trafficking, and cybercrime. She also held a meeting with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who highlighted Pakistan’s position on regional stability and global peace while emphasizing the country’s commitment to constructive international engagement.
