The Karachi heatwave is expected to intensify this week as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned that temperatures in the city could climb between 39°C and 42°C from June 9 to June 12. Authorities have urged residents to take precautionary measures amid rising health concerns.
According to the PMD, a strong high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere is driving the extreme weather conditions across Sindh. As a result, daytime temperatures are expected to remain 4°C to 6°C above seasonal averages, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
The Karachi heatwave is part of a broader weather pattern affecting the province. Several upper Sindh districts, including Sukkur, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Larkana, Dadu, Khairpur and Ghotki, are forecast to experience temperatures between 48°C and 51°C during the coming days.
Other districts such as Hyderabad, Badin, Matiari, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Jamshoro and Sanghar are likely to record temperatures ranging from 42°C to 45°C. Meteorologists have also warned of isolated dust storms in plain areas due to intense atmospheric heating.
Government authorities have directed deputy commissioners, disaster management officials and relevant departments to implement heatwave response plans. Emergency preparedness measures are being activated to minimize risks to public health and essential services.
Health experts have advised citizens to avoid direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm, drink plenty of water and reduce unnecessary outdoor activities. Children, elderly individuals and women are considered particularly vulnerable during the Karachi heatwave and should exercise extra caution.
The extreme weather is also expected to increase electricity consumption as cooling demand rises. Farmers have been advised to protect crops and livestock, while residents across Sindh are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and follow safety guidelines throughout the heatwave period.
