Pakistan remittances hit record $4.3 billion in May: SBP

Pakistan remittances reached a historic high in May 2026 as overseas Pakistanis sent $4.3 billion during the month, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). The central bank said this was the highest monthly remittance inflow ever recorded by the country.

The latest Pakistan remittances figure showed a 20.2% increase compared with April 2026 and a 15.4% rise year-on-year. The SBP shared the update on Wednesday, highlighting the strong contribution of overseas workers to the national economy.

Finance Minister’s Adviser Khurram Schehzad described the development as a major economic milestone. In a post on X, he said workers’ remittances surged to a record $4.25 billion, reflecting growing confidence among overseas Pakistanis in the country’s economic direction.

The strong inflows are expected to support Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves, stabilize the rupee, and ease pressure on external accounts. Pakistan remittances remain one of the country’s largest sources of foreign currency and play a vital role in financing imports and reducing the trade deficit.

During the current fiscal year, remittance inflows have continued to grow steadily. Officials say total remittances for FY26 are now on track to cross $41 billion for the first time in Pakistan’s history if the current trend continues in June.

Economists, however, caution that regional tensions in the Gulf could affect future inflows. Countries in the Gulf, particularly Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, contribute a major share of Pakistan remittances, making the economy sensitive to developments in the region.

Remittances account for nearly 9–10% of Pakistan’s GDP and support millions of households across the country. Analysts say the record inflow in May offers temporary relief to the economy at a time of rising oil prices and ongoing external financing challenges.
