Karachi is experiencing intense Karachi heatwave conditions as the feels-like temperature surged to 49°C on Wednesday, driven by high humidity levels and persistent hot weather across the city.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the actual temperature in the city reached 37°C at 1pm, but humidity at 56% significantly increased the apparent temperature, making conditions more severe for residents.
Weather officials said the Karachi heatwave is being intensified by a high-pressure system affecting much of the country, with hot and humid conditions expected to continue for several more days.
The Met Office has warned that maximum temperatures in Karachi could remain between 40°C and 43°C until June 12. Night-time temperatures are also expected to stay higher than normal, reducing relief for citizens after sunset.
Strong southwest winds at 26 km/h were recorded, but they provided little relief as humidity kept conditions uncomfortable throughout the day. The persistent Karachi heatwave has already impacted daily life, with people advised to limit outdoor activity.
Authorities have urged citizens, especially children, women, and elderly people, to take extra precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm during peak heat hours.
The ongoing Karachi heatwave is expected to continue until June 12, with officials warning that temperatures may rise further if the weather system persists longer than forecasted.
