Monsoon rains in Pakistan have claimed at least 43 lives and injured 177 people across Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), according to provincial disaster management authorities. Heavy downpours continued on Thursday, prompting flood warnings, large-scale drainage operations and fresh weather alerts in several regions.
Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said 21 people have died and 154 others have been injured in monsoon-related incidents this season. Lahore recorded 343 millimetres of rainfall during the past 48 hours, causing severe waterlogging, traffic disruption and emergency drainage operations across the provincial capital.
Authorities said roof and building collapses were responsible for 15 of the 21 deaths reported in Punjab. Two people died after lightning strikes, three were electrocuted and one person drowned. The PDMA also confirmed partial damage to 38 houses while rescue teams remained on alert throughout the province.
Among the latest victims were two teenage brothers, Hamza Arif, 18, and Hassan Arif, 16, who died after their motorcycle skidded on a rain-soaked road near Lahore while travelling towards Kasur. Traffic police urged motorists to avoid speeding, wear helmets and drive carefully on slippery roads.
In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the PDMA reported 22 deaths and 23 injuries after four days of continuous rainfall. The victims included nine men, ten children and three women. Authorities also reported damage to 37 houses, including eight that were completely destroyed in rain-related incidents across several districts.
Officials said rescue operations were continuing in coordination with Rescue 1122 and local administrations. Although river levels remained within normal limits, district authorities were placed on high alert due to the risk of urban flooding, flash floods and further heavy rainfall.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department warned that monsoon rains in Pakistan are expected to continue over the next 24 hours in Lahore, other parts of Punjab, Kashmir and the Islamabad-Rawalpindi region. Authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flooded areas and follow official weather advisories to reduce the risk of further casualties.
