YouTube Introduces New Thumbnail Tool For Shorts Creators

YouTube custom Shorts thumbnails are now becoming easier to manage as the platform has introduced a long-awaited feature for content creators. The new tool allows eligible users to upload and edit custom thumbnails for their Shorts, helping videos attract more viewers.

According to YouTube, the feature is currently available only to creators enrolled in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), meaning those who monetize their videos. These creators can now upload custom thumbnail images specifically for their Shorts content.

The update is designed to give creators greater control over how their videos appear across the platform. A more attractive thumbnail can improve visibility and encourage viewers to click on Shorts videos.

YouTube also announced that creators will be able to edit thumbnails of previously uploaded Shorts through YouTube Studio on desktop and laptop computers. This provides additional flexibility without requiring creators to re-upload their videos.

The company said the feature will gradually be expanded to more users in the near future. Until then, access will remain limited to eligible Partner Program members.

On desktop, creators can choose from three suggested frames generated by YouTube as thumbnail options. This functionality has already been available for long-form videos and is now being extended to Shorts.

Meanwhile, mobile users will continue to have the option of selecting any frame from their Shorts video as the thumbnail. YouTube added that its recommendations will increasingly consider each video’s theme and style to suggest more effective thumbnail options.
