EIB funding Sindh Pakistan received a major boost as the European Investment Bank’s global development arm announced a €160 million commitment to support reconstruction and water infrastructure projects in the country.
The funding was announced by the European Investment Bank through its international development division, EIB Global, during the conclusion of the EU-Pakistan Business Forum held in Islamabad.
Out of the total package, €100 million will be used for a large-scale housing reconstruction programme in Sindh. The initiative aims to rebuild around 2.1 million rural homes destroyed during the devastating 2022 floods.
This EIB funding Sindh Pakistan project is considered one of the largest reconstruction efforts globally, covering nearly 40 percent of rural households in the province and supporting long-term climate resilience.
In addition, €60 million has been allocated for Karachi’s water infrastructure. The funds will support the construction of energy-efficient filtration plants in Gharo and Pipri to improve access to clean drinking water.
Once completed, the Karachi water project is expected to supply around 300 million litres of clean water daily, benefiting approximately 2.2 million residents in Pakistan’s largest city.
Officials from the European Union and EIB said the investment reflects a renewed commitment to Pakistan’s sustainable development, marking the return of EIB financing to the country after a decade-long gap.
