Antonio Banderas has joined Nicolas Cage in True Detective season 5, the upcoming instalment of HBO’s crime anthology series. According to reports, production is scheduled to begin in 2027 in Jamaica Bay, New York. The new season will introduce fresh characters while continuing the franchise’s tradition of exploring different crime stories.
According to Deadline, Banderas will play Rai Garcia, while Cage will portray Henry Logan. Cage’s involvement became public at New York Comic-Con last week. Reports in 2025 had previously indicated that the actor was in talks to join the series.
Issa López, who created and led the fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, will return as the writer, director and showrunner. She will also executive produce the upcoming season alongside Banderas, Cage and several other producers associated with the franchise.
Although HBO has not revealed the full storyline, López has hinted at connections between the new season and Night Country. She previously indicated that the upcoming instalment would feature a different story and new characters while maintaining certain links to the Alaska-based fourth season.
The crime anthology has featured different locations and casts throughout its run. The first season starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in Louisiana. Season two moved to California, featuring Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn, while the third season followed a case in the Ozarks with Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff.
The fourth season, Night Country, starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis and took viewers to Alaska. López’s return for True Detective season 5 signals another chapter under her creative leadership. HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi previously praised López’s vision for the new season and its distinctive setting.
Banderas and Cage will lead the upcoming instalment as the series moves toward its planned 2027 production. Further details about the plot, additional cast members and the release date remain undisclosed. Fans can expect more information as HBO shares updates about the next chapter of the crime drama.
