Araghchi Sees Little Hope for Progress With US

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has expressed little hope for progress in diplomatic efforts with the United States, saying Washington has shown no willingness to reach an understanding with Tehran. He reiterated that Iran remains prepared for diplomacy but will continue to defend itself.

In a statement, Araghchi questioned the sincerity of the US administration’s publicly expressed desire for engagement. He said Tehran could not place confidence in Washington’s stated intentions, raising doubts about the prospects for meaningful diplomatic progress between the two countries.

The Iranian foreign minister said the United States had not demonstrated a readiness to reach an agreement. According to Araghchi, the absence of such willingness has left little reason to expect progress in the current situation. His remarks reflected growing uncertainty over the possibility of renewed diplomatic engagement.

Araghchi maintained that Iran remained open to diplomatic efforts despite the lack of progress. His statement indicated that Tehran had not ruled out dialogue, although it remained sceptical about the intentions communicated by the US administration.

He also stressed that Iran would defend itself. The statement placed diplomacy alongside Tehran’s stated commitment to national defence, signalling that Iran’s willingness to engage would not mean abandoning its position on security.

The comments highlight the continuing gap between Iran’s stated readiness for diplomacy and its assessment of Washington’s intentions. Araghchi’s remarks did not identify any new negotiations, agreements or specific diplomatic initiatives. Instead, he focused on what he described as the US administration’s lack of willingness to reach an understanding.

Araghchi’s statement leaves the prospects for diplomatic progress uncertain. While Iran says it remains prepared to pursue diplomacy, the foreign minister’s comments suggest that Tehran currently sees limited grounds for optimism. Further progress would depend on whether both sides demonstrate a willingness to engage and work towards an understanding.
