Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has issued a fresh warning about the rapid development of artificial intelligence, saying the technology could cause major disruption to employment and society if governments fail to prepare.
In a new essay published on his Gates Notes website, Gates argued that some jobs should remain exclusively in human hands even when AI and robots become technically capable of performing them. He described the idea as “Human Reserved,” comparing it to nature reserves where certain areas are deliberately protected because their loss would be too costly.
Gates pointed to healthcare and caregiving as examples where human involvement could remain essential. He argued that while an AI system might technically be able to tell a patient about an incurable illness, there are situations where empathy and human connection should not be replaced by a machine.
The billionaire philanthropist warned that AI could transform sectors including law, customer service, medicine, software and manufacturing over a relatively short period. He also said blue-collar workers could eventually face greater disruption as robotics become more capable and affordable.
Gates believes governments need to act before large-scale job displacement becomes a crisis. Among his proposals is changing the economic incentives that encourage companies to replace employees with machines. He has suggested considering taxes on AI systems and robots, with the revenue potentially supporting worker retraining and stronger social safety nets.
The Microsoft co-founder also called for stronger national and international frameworks to manage AI. He argued that its impact will extend beyond employment into education, healthcare, national security, taxation, public services and other areas of society. Gates has also stressed the importance of cooperation between major powers, including the United States and China.
Despite his concerns, Gates has not rejected AI. He continues to see major opportunities for the technology, particularly in healthcare, scientific research and education. His central argument is that societies should find a way to capture AI’s benefits while limiting the damage caused by rapid automation.
