Rawalpindi Islamabad rain caused widespread flooding on Tuesday, inundating low-lying areas, disrupting traffic and creating emergency conditions across the twin cities. Authorities closed educational institutions as heavy monsoon showers continued.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded 201 millimetres of rain at Shamsabad, the highest rainfall total in the twin cities. New Katarian received 186mm, while Golra recorded 157mm and the PMD station received 146mm.
Authorities declared a rain emergency in Rawalpindi and placed WASA, Rescue 1122, Civil Defence and Solid Waste Management on high alert. Several major roads and low-lying neighbourhoods came under water after the intense downpour.
Old Airport Road, Rahimabad Bridge and Murree Road near Committee Chowk faced severe flooding. Several feet of water accumulated in some areas, causing long traffic queues and leaving motorists stranded for hours. Heavy machinery was deployed at vulnerable locations.
The Rawalpindi Islamabad rain spell also caused a fatal incident in Islamabad’s G-14 sector. A house roof collapsed, killing one person and seriously injuring another. Rescue teams shifted the injured person to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment.
Water levels also rose in Rawal Dam and Nala Lai. The Rawal Dam level reached 1,751 feet, prompting authorities to open its spillways. Sirens sounded near Nala Lai, where water reached 27 feet at Katarian and 21 feet at Gawalmandi.
Authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors. District administration and PDMA teams are monitoring the situation around the clock. The weather department has forecast continued rainfall in the region until September 5, while officials advised residents to stay away from electricity wires and accumulated water.
