Russia reported a large-scale Ukraine drone attack on Russia, with 630 unmanned aerial vehicles reportedly heading toward Moscow between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air defence forces intercepted many of the drones before they reached the capital. Three people were injured in separate incidents in Moscow and the Lipetsk region.
Sobyanin said the drones approached Moscow between 8:30pm on October 21 and 4am on October 22. In a statement shared on the Max messaging platform, he reported that Russian air defences destroyed numerous drones at a considerable distance from the city. He added that 163 drones approaching the capital were also intercepted.
According to official figures cited by Russian authorities, the incident was among the largest drone attacks targeting Moscow this year. The reported scale of the operation placed renewed attention on the Russian capital’s air defence measures. However, the available information did not independently establish the total number of drones launched or provide details about the locations from which they originated.
Two people were injured near Voronovo, an area within Moscow’s southwestern administrative districts of Troitsky and Novomoskovsky, Sobyanin said. Authorities did not immediately provide further details about the injured individuals or the extent of damage in the affected area. The reported casualties added to concerns over the impact of the attacks near residential communities.
Sobyanin also referred to an earlier incident on September 19, which he described as the largest drone attack on Moscow so far. According to his account, Russian air defences intercepted more than 1,600 drones that night, including 450 reportedly heading toward the capital. These figures were attributed to the Moscow mayor and were not independently verified in the available report.
Meanwhile, the Lipetsk region also reported damage following a drone attack. Regional Governor Igor Artamonov said several private houses and multi-storey residential buildings were affected in different parts of the region. A man born in 2001 sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for medical treatment, according to the governor.
Artamonov added that falling drone debris damaged a polyclinic building. He said the medical facility was closed at the time, and nobody was inside. Regional authorities reported three injured people in total across Moscow and Lipetsk, while damage assessments continued. The available information did not provide further details about the attack’s full impact or the circumstances surrounding the reported drone launches.
