Actor Zara Noor Abbas has said Pakistani cinema needs to deliver quality films before asking audiences to support the local entertainment industry. Her comments came ahead of the nationwide release of her upcoming film Sheroes on Friday.
The actor said the idea that audiences should watch Pakistani films simply because they are locally made is outdated. According to Abbas, cinema-goers visit theatres primarily to enjoy entertainment, regardless of where a movie was produced.
Zara Noor Abbas said filmmakers therefore have a responsibility to create stories that give audiences a reason to spend money and time at cinemas. She noted that people may choose a movie after completing other activities, such as dining out, and expect an enjoyable experience.
The Zara Noor Abbas Pakistani cinema comments also highlighted the importance of building successful film franchises. She pointed to Spider-Man as an example of a franchise that has developed a strong connection with audiences and encouraged fans to return to theatres for new releases.
Abbas said Pakistani filmmakers need to build similar confidence among local audiences. She explained that moviegoers should feel their ticket price, which can range from Rs1,500 to Rs2,000, will provide an experience worth paying for.
Speaking about Sheroes, the actor encouraged audiences to give the film a chance. She said the team had experimented with new ideas and that the project involved new directors, including one filmmaker making his feature debut for cinema audiences.
Sheroes is an anthology featuring three separate stories about women facing different circumstances. Abbas leads the segment Gear Up, in which she plays a police officer specialising in bomb disposal. Kinza Hashmi leads Artist, while Ushna Shah stars in Punch. The film is scheduled to open in cinemas nationwide on Friday.
