A 20-member special committee has been established to recommend reforms at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. According to sources, the committee includes prominent healthcare experts from both the public and private sectors.
Sources said the special committee will conduct a detailed review of the hospital’s administrative affairs. The committee will assess the existing management structure and examine possible measures to improve the overall functioning of PIMS.
The committee will also submit recommendations regarding the management and operation of the hospital. Experts are expected to review administrative procedures, decision-making mechanisms and other relevant areas before presenting their proposals.
According to sources, the PIMS Reforms Committee will submit its report to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The prime minister is expected to make a final decision regarding the future administrative arrangements at PIMS after reviewing the committee’s findings and recommendations.
Sources further said that a decision has been taken to establish a Board of Governors to oversee the affairs of PIMS. The proposed board is expected to include individuals from different fields of life, with the aim of bringing broader expertise into the hospital’s management.
The reform process has gained additional significance following a tragic incident at PIMS last month. A fire at the hospital reportedly resulted in the deaths of 14 newborn babies, raising concerns about the hospital’s management, emergency response and safety arrangements.
Following the tragedy, eight PIMS officials, including the executive director, were suspended. Criminal proceedings have also reportedly been initiated against the suspended officials.
