Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the successful launch of the new Sarmat nuclear missile and described it as the “most powerful in the world”. According to Russian state television, the launch was carried out successfully under the supervision of Strategic Missile Forces commander Sergei Karakayev. During a televised meeting, Karakayev informed Putin that the missile system had passed the latest testing phase and was ready for future deployment.
Putin announced that Russia plans to place the Sarmat missile system on combat duty before the end of the year. The missile is designed to carry multiple nuclear warheads and strike targets thousands of kilometres away, including locations in Europe and the United States. The Putin Sarmat missile test is being viewed as a major step in Russia’s military modernisation programme.
The Russian president claimed the missile’s warhead power was several times greater than Western equivalents. He also said the missile could bypass both existing and future missile defence systems. The Sarmat missile, also known in the West as “Satan II,” has faced several technical setbacks in recent years. One failed test in 2024 reportedly caused major damage at a launch site. Despite earlier delays, Moscow now appears determined to move forward with operational deployment after the latest successful launch.
The timing of the Putin Sarmat missile test is significant because it comes after the expiration of the New START treaty between Russia and the United States. The agreement had previously limited the number of deployed strategic nuclear weapons held by both countries. Its expiration has raised fresh concerns among global security experts.
Since the beginning of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Putin has repeatedly highlighted Russia’s nuclear strength in public statements. Western governments and analysts view these remarks as attempts to discourage deeper military involvement in support of Ukraine. The latest missile test is expected to increase international debate over nuclear security and global stability.
