The Punjab government has announced the launch of Pakistan’s first modern public e-bike rental system, marking a major step toward sustainable urban transportation. The project will begin in Lahore and aims to provide residents with an affordable, convenient, and environmentally friendly travel option.
Under the first phase of the initiative, authorities plan to deploy 10,000 electric bikes across the city. In addition, 300 docking and charging stations will be established at strategic locations to ensure easy access and smooth operations for commuters.
The Punjab E-Bike Rental Service is designed to strengthen “last-mile connectivity,” enabling citizens to travel easily between residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, and nearby public transportation hubs. Officials believe the project will help bridge transportation gaps and improve overall mobility within the city.
According to the Housing Department spokesperson, users will be able to rent an e-bike within seconds through a dedicated mobile application. The digital platform will allow riders to locate, unlock, and return bikes conveniently, making daily travel more efficient.
The initiative is also expected to deliver significant environmental benefits. By introducing 10,000 electric bikes, the government anticipates a substantial reduction in annual carbon emissions. The project supports broader efforts to promote cleaner transportation and reduce dependence on fuel-powered vehicles.
Officials further stated that the increased use of e-bikes could help ease traffic congestion, lower transportation costs for residents, and contribute to improved air quality in Lahore. These benefits align with the province’s long-term vision for smart and sustainable urban development.
The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) will provide space for docking and charging stations, while the Transport Department, Safe City Authority, and other relevant agencies will collaborate to ensure successful implementation.
