The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed financial penalties on Pakistan and Sri Lanka following slow over-rate offences during the opening match of the tri-nation ODI series. Both teams failed to complete their allotted overs within the stipulated time, prompting disciplinary action under the ICC’s playing regulations.
According to the ICC, Pakistan have been fined 10 percent of their match fees, while Sri Lanka received a penalty amounting to 5 percent of their match fees. The sanctions followed the teams’ failure to maintain the required over rate during the first one-day international of the tournament.
The official details revealed that Pakistan were two overs short of the required rate by the end of the allotted time. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, were found to be one over behind the required schedule. Such offences are addressed under cricket’s playing conditions to ensure matches progress within the designated timeframe.
Pakistan captain Shaheen Afridi and Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis accepted their respective teams’ offences, according to the ICC. Their admission allowed the disciplinary matters to be resolved in accordance with the applicable regulations.
The opening fixture of the tri-nation ODI series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka was played at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Pakistan delivered a convincing performance to secure a comfortable victory over Sri Lanka, making a winning start to the competition.
Despite their success on the field, Pakistan will face a financial penalty because of the slow over rate recorded during the match. Sri Lanka have also been sanctioned for failing to complete their overs on time, although their fine is lower than Pakistan’s.
