KMC municipal tax collection

KMC Collects Rs4 Billion in Municipal Tax, Prepares Rs60 Billion Budget

Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has successfully collected Rs4 billion in municipal taxes during the current fiscal year, marking a significant achievement in revenue generation. The tax is collected through electricity bills issued to consumers across Karachi.

KMC had initially set a target of Rs6 billion for municipal tax collection. While the full target was not achieved, officials believe the revenue performance reflects considerable progress compared to previous years.

Financial Advisor Gulzar Ali stated that achieving around 60 percent of a revenue target should be viewed as a major accomplishment. He noted that such a level of tax recovery had not been witnessed in the past, highlighting improvements in the city’s revenue collection system.

According to Gulzar Ali, the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 is expected to be close to Rs60 billion. The budget is likely to be presented before the City Council on June 18 by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab for approval.

The upcoming budget is expected to focus heavily on development initiatives aimed at improving urban infrastructure and public services. City officials are working to allocate resources efficiently to address Karachi’s growing needs.

Gulzar Ali revealed that a combined amount of approximately Rs37 billion will be spent on development projects during the next fiscal year. The funding will come from both allocations provided by the Sindh government and KMC’s own revenue sources.

The strong KMC municipal tax collection performance and the proposed development spending plan indicate the city’s efforts to strengthen financial management and accelerate infrastructure development. Officials hope the upcoming budget will support long-term improvements in Karachi’s civic services and urban growth.
