Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has questioned whether the country is prepared for the creation of new administrative units and provinces, saying such a major decision requires serious planning and consultation.
Addressing a General Council meeting in Sukkur, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said political power in the country appeared to be moving between Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He described the situation as a cycle of governance shifting from Nawaz Sharif to Asif Ali Zardari and back again.
The JUI-F chief also accused the government of attempting to deprive the nation of political awareness. He emphasized that Pakistan belongs to its people and said citizens should not be required to prove their patriotism through any certificate.
Commenting on discussions surrounding the creation of new provinces, Maulana Fazlur Rehman questioned whether adequate preparations had been made for such a move. He particularly raised concerns about the readiness of Sindh for any possible administrative restructuring.
“Have you prepared for it?” he asked while referring to the discussion about new provinces. According to the JUI-F chief, Sindh was not ready for the creation of a new province or major administrative changes at present.
His remarks come amid recurring political debate in Pakistan over the creation of additional provinces and administrative units. Supporters of such proposals often argue that smaller administrative regions could improve governance and service delivery, while opponents raise concerns about political, financial and constitutional complications.
