Nolan’s The Odyssey has triggered a remarkable rise in demand for Greek mythology books across the United Kingdom, with readers turning to Homer’s epic after the film’s successful release. The blockbuster has not only attracted large cinema audiences but has also inspired renewed interest in classical literature and ancient history.
According to market research data, UK print sales of The Odyssey increased by around 1,400 percent during the four weeks ending July 25 compared with the same period last year. Emily Wilson’s acclaimed 2017 English translation recorded particularly strong growth as readers searched for modern editions of the ancient epic.
Major bookstore chain Waterstones also reported a dramatic increase in sales. The retailer said purchases of Wilson’s translation rose by more than 1,000 percent compared with last year, while demand for other translations of The Odyssey continued to climb each week.
The popularity of Nolan’s The Odyssey has also lifted sales of related mythology titles, including The Iliad, Circe, and The Penelopiad. Books by British author Stephen Fry, including The Odyssey, Mythos, and Troy, have also climbed bestseller rankings, reflecting broader public interest in Greek mythology.
Streaming platforms have noticed the trend as well. Spotify reported a sharp increase in searches for audiobook versions of The Odyssey, suggesting that audiences are exploring both printed and digital formats after watching the film.
Classics scholars have welcomed the renewed enthusiasm for ancient literature. Academics at several British universities believe the film could encourage more students to study Greek and Roman history, literature, and languages. They argue that Homer’s stories have remained relevant for centuries because of their timeless themes and memorable characters.
While Nolan’s The Odyssey has earned commercial success, it has also generated debate among literary experts. Some praised the renewed attention given to Homer, while others criticised the screenplay for departing from the depth of the original poem. Despite differing opinions, the film has succeeded in bringing classical mythology back into mainstream cultural discussion.
