Pakistan IMF Talks Begin on MEFP as Both Sides Seek Staff-Level Agreement

Formal Pakistan IMF talks have started between the International Monetary Fund (IMF) review mission and Pakistani authorities to reach an understanding on the Memorandum of Financial and Economic Policies (MEFP). The discussions are considered an important step toward finalizing a Staff-Level Agreement (SLA).

According to officials familiar with the discussions, both sides have now moved into detailed negotiations over the MEFP. The talks are focused on areas where differences or pending matters still need to be addressed before the two sides can reach a broader understanding.

The MEFP is a key part of the IMF review process because it outlines the economic and financial policies that a country agrees to implement under an IMF-supported programme. Reaching consensus on the document could therefore bring Pakistan closer to completing the current review.

Officials said the negotiations are aimed at resolving the remaining issues as quickly as possible. Both Pakistan and the IMF are reportedly working to narrow their differences and establish a common position on the outstanding policy matters.

If significant progress is achieved during the ongoing discussions, officials expect the Pakistan IMF talks to result in a Staff-Level Agreement by the conclusion of the current round of negotiations. Such an agreement would mark a major milestone in the review process.
