Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan have agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a Pakistan Kyrgyzstan strategic partnership, marking a significant step toward expanding cooperation in trade, investment, energy and regional connectivity. The announcement came after talks between President Asif Ali Zardari and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov during Zardari’s visit to Cholpon-Ata, where both leaders issued a joint declaration outlining their shared vision for stronger bilateral ties.
The two presidents reaffirmed their commitment to increasing cooperation across several key sectors, including energy, agriculture, mining, textiles, the halal industry and pharmaceuticals. They agreed to encourage joint investment and explore new economic opportunities that could benefit both countries.
A major focus of the discussions was the CASA-1000 energy project, which aims to improve electricity connectivity between Central and South Asia. Both sides pledged to accelerate work on the project, while Pakistan reiterated its willingness to provide Central Asian countries with access to international markets through its seaports.
The joint declaration also emphasized the importance of improving regional connectivity and strengthening trade links. Leaders from both countries described economic cooperation as a cornerstone of their future relationship and expressed confidence that enhanced connectivity would support sustainable growth across the region.
On regional security, President Zardari and President Japarov agreed to strengthen cooperation against terrorism and extremism. They reaffirmed their commitment to working together through international platforms, including the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, to promote peace and stability.
The Kyrgyz president acknowledged Pakistan’s contributions to United Nations peace initiatives and its diplomatic efforts in the Middle East. He also welcomed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding aimed at supporting long-term regional peace and stability.
During the visit, President Japarov invited President Zardari to attend the World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan in August 2026, an invitation that was accepted. President Zardari confirmed Pakistan would send an official delegation and sports teams, while also inviting President Japarov to visit Pakistan, further reflecting the growing momentum in bilateral relations.
