NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has praised Pakistan’s role and contributions to global peace and security during a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in New York.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s strong commitment to the objectives and principles of the UN Charter.
The prime minister also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region. He appreciated the leadership of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his efforts to address major international challenges.
During the meeting, the two leaders discussed key regional and global developments, including the situation in the Middle East. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and their right to establish an independent state.
The prime minister also drew the UN secretary-general’s attention to the growing trend of Islamophobia around the world. The two leaders exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan and expressed concern over the reported increase in terrorism emanating from Afghan territory.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts aimed at promoting peaceful solutions to conflicts and achieving lasting peace and stability in the region. He also acknowledged Pakistan’s broader contributions to international peace and security.
