Pakistani short film The Last Glance has qualified for the 2027 Academy Awards longlist following a major win at the Tasveer Film Festival in Seattle. The film, directed by Pakistani filmmaker Kamran Faiq, received the Jury Award for Best Short at the festival’s 21st edition, held from October 13 to 18.
Faiq told Images that The Last Glance was the only film from the Tasveer Film Festival to qualify for the Oscars longlist. He explained that thousands of short films compete for consideration, while only a limited number advance to the qualifying stage. However, he clarified that the film has not received an Oscar nomination.
The filmmaker said the team would continue preparing for the next stage of the awards race. According to Faiq, discussions are underway to bring an Oscar-nominated actor on board as an executive producer. The individual would represent the project during the next phase of the Academy Awards campaign, although no name was announced.
The story of The Last Glance centres on a family forced to flee its village during the night to escape violence. The cast includes Adnan Shah Tipu, Areej Ayub and Fahad Hashmi. Faiq wrote and produced the film, while Umer Peerzada served as producer and Khalid Saeed Khan as executive producer. Mike McNamara and Armeena Rana Khan worked as co-producers.
The film’s qualification for the Oscars longlist follows another international achievement. It recently won the Best International Short Film award at the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival in Canada. These accomplishments have strengthened its profile among audiences and festival organisers beyond Pakistan.
Faiq also announced on Instagram that The Last Glance had been selected as one of eight finalists for the short film programme at the Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles. The finalists were chosen from films representing more than 50 Asian countries, adding another international milestone to the project’s growing record.
Although qualifying for the longlist does not guarantee an Oscar nomination, the achievement marks an important step for the Pakistani film. Its festival recognition highlights the opportunities available to local filmmakers competing internationally and brings further attention to Pakistani short-film production.
