Canada has imposed new sanctions on 10 Iranian individuals and entities over what the Canadian government describes as ongoing repression and serious human rights violations in Iran.
The latest measures target five Iranian individuals and five entities. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said Canada is using the tools available to respond to what it considers unacceptable actions by the Iranian government.
Among those targeted is Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. Other individuals included in the sanctions are Davoud Moazami Goudarzi, Rasoul Jalili, Mohsen Fathizadeh and Ruhollah Momen Nasab.
The sanctioned entities include the Iranian Audiovisual Media Regulatory Authority, the Working Group for Determining Instances of Criminal Content, Douran Group, Yaftar Pazhohan Pishtaz Rayanesh Limited Company and the Seraj Cyberspace Organization.
According to the Canadian government, the targeted organizations are associated with media regulation, state censorship, technology and cyberspace activities. Canada has accused the Iranian authorities of restricting fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.
Foreign Minister Anita Anand said Canada would continue using targeted sanctions and other available measures in response to actions by the Iranian government.
