Saudi Arabia launches Riyadh Air despite Middle East tensions

Saudi Arabia has officially launched its new national carrier Riyadh Air, marking a major step in its long-term aviation and economic diversification strategy despite ongoing Middle East tensions and regional instability.

A London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner in Riyadh Air’s white and lavender livery took off early Wednesday, signaling the start of operations after more than a year of delays linked to aircraft delivery issues and global supply chain challenges.

The Riyadh Air launch is part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan, aimed at reducing dependence on oil and transforming Riyadh into a major global aviation hub competing with cities like Dubai. The airline is owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), a key driver of the kingdom’s economic reforms.

CEO Tony Douglas said the airline aims to bring a new level of luxury and refinement to global aviation, adding that the project represents years of preparation and long-term planning despite regional uncertainty caused by ongoing Middle East tensions.

Saudi Arabia plans to expand Riyadh’s aviation infrastructure significantly, including a new mega airport with capacity for 120 million passengers annually. The country also aims to triple air traffic to 330 million passengers by 2030 under its Vision 2030 strategy.

Riyadh Air has placed major aircraft orders, including 132 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and additional Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, as it prepares to connect over 100 international destinations within the next five years.

Despite optimism, analysts note that the airline enters a highly competitive Gulf aviation market dominated by established carriers such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad, raising questions about long-term growth amid regional geopolitical uncertainty and Middle East tensions.
