Sindh Senior Minister Shajeel Memon has said that people elected through the public vote should make decisions on behalf of the nation. He criticised what he described as “charitable or artificial mandates.”
Speaking in the Sindh Assembly, Memon defended the 18th Constitutional Amendment and said it had helped bring major progress in several sectors. He cited health, education and energy as areas that benefited from the amendment.
The senior minister questioned the condition of Jinnah Hospital before the 18th Amendment and compared it with its current situation. He also criticised federal ministers who, according to him, were now speaking against the constitutional amendment.
Memon said more than 3,500 megawatts of electricity were being generated from Thar. He added that energy produced using Sindh’s resources was benefiting people across the country and contributing to Pakistan’s power supply.
The provincial minister also responded to criticism from Mustafa Kamal, Ahsan Iqbal and Khawaja Asif. He said anyone with objections to the provincial position should raise the matter in Parliament, while the Sindh Assembly was capable of responding through constitutional and legal arguments.
Shajeel Memon urged federal ministers to first go among the people and seek their votes before making claims about national decision-making. He said elected representatives should derive their authority from voters rather than what he called an artificial mandate.
Memon reiterated that decisions affecting the nation should be taken by representatives chosen through elections. He said those who have secured a public mandate through votes should have the authority to speak and make decisions on behalf of the people.
