The Sindh government has ordered a fresh investigation into the Mir Raza Ali murder case following findings by a judicial commission. The provincial government has formed a new joint investigation team (JIT) to examine the killing. A separate committee will investigate alleged police negligence and possible attempts to cover up the case, Aaj News reported on October 24.
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar said Deputy Inspector General of Police Irfan Baloch would lead the new JIT. The team will include representatives from the Rangers, federal intelligence agencies and the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency. The provincial Home Department has asked the Rangers to nominate a Grade-18 officer for the investigation.
The government will also establish a separate committee to examine the police response during the first 10 days of the case. It plans to include a Grade-20 officer from the Federal Investigation Agency. The Home Department has contacted the federal interior ministry to nominate an officer. Lanjar said the JIT would be authorised to submit the case challan before the court after completing the required legal formalities.
Mir Raza Ali, a 25-year-old businessman, went missing from Karachi’s PECHS area on July 28, 2026. Police found his body in Gulistan-e-Jauhar two days later, showing signs of torture and gunshot wounds. Police initially suspected suicide, but his family alleged that he had been abducted, tortured and murdered. A court later ordered the exhumation of his body on August 8 for a second post-mortem examination.
The Sindh High Court facilitated the formation of a judicial commission to examine the case. The commission submitted its report to the provincial government on October 15. The provincial cabinet subsequently published the report on the official website. The findings prompted further action against officials over alleged investigative failures and shortcomings in the handling of the case.
The government has also formed a committee led by DIG Zulfiqar Larak to review the police investigation system, crime scene unit and related departments. Police chief Javed Alam Odho has pledged to implement the commission’s recommendations. Authorities have ordered action against several police officials, including the removal and suspension of SHO Adeel Afzal. An FIA inquiry has also been ordered into allegations of evidence tampering involving SHO Kamran Qureshi.
Separately, the Home Department has sought the immediate suspension of Dr Osama Sheikh over alleged shortcomings in post-mortem and medico-legal procedures, alongside two years of further training. Authorities have also recommended commendation certificates for two personnel for their performance. The chief minister has directed officials to provide the commission’s report to the victim’s family, while a four-member ministerial subcommittee will determine further steps to ensure justice.
