Iran and Oman are set to hold fresh discussions today on the Strait of Hormuz, with maritime security, shipping arrangements and regional tensions expected to remain at the center of the talks. Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi is scheduled to visit Tehran as the two neighboring countries continue consultations over the strategically important waterway.
The Iran Oman talks on the Strait of Hormuz come amid heightened tensions involving Tehran and Washington. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has rejected claims that large volumes of oil are currently moving through the waterway, describing such reports as part of what he characterized as psychological and media warfare.
Baghaei has previously said that Iran and Oman are working on practical mechanisms for the safe movement of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier negotiations reportedly made progress, with both sides discussing safe passage while taking into account the sovereign rights and security concerns of the two coastal states.
The situation has also raised concerns beyond the Gulf. Iranian officials have warned countries against allowing their territory or facilities to be used in support of US military operations against Iran. Baghaei specifically criticized the reported use of US refueling aircraft in Bulgaria and warned that countries facilitating attacks could face consequences.
Meanwhile, Iran’s newly appointed Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohsen Rezaei has adopted a particularly firm position over the country’s economic confrontation with the United States. Iranian officials have repeatedly linked the future of the Strait of Hormuz to wider security and political conditions surrounding the conflict.
Tehran has also insisted that any arrangement with Oman concerning safe shipping should not automatically be interpreted as a full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
