Strategic air defence deal signed by Ukraine, Saudi Arabia

Ukraine and Saudi Arabia finalized an air defence cooperation deal on Friday during President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit.

The agreement aims to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s ability to counter Iranian drone attacks using Ukraine’s proven expertise. Officials said the pact includes system development, component integration, and operational guidance.

For four years, Kyiv has defended against Russian drones using a combination of interceptors, electronic jamming, and anti-aircraft guns.

Ukraine proposes exchanging its interceptors for the more advanced air-defence missiles deployed in Gulf countries. The deal will enhance Saudi Arabia’s drone defence while potentially providing Ukraine access to high-end missile systems.

Officials noted the agreement goes beyond interceptors, covering system integration, AI applications, and data analysis to detect and neutralize Shahed and other drones. Ukrainian experts emphasize that their mix of low-cost technology and tactical experience makes their air defence methods highly effective.

President Zelensky confirmed the agreement on social media, highlighting a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He called it an “important defence cooperation deal” and stressed mutual benefits, noting Saudi capabilities could also support Ukraine in defending against Russian missile attacks.

Zelensky also met with Ukrainian anti-drone specialists deployed in the Gulf, praising their expertise and contribution. He said Ukraine’s experience in countering drone threats is “unique” and highly valued internationally.

The partnership underscores growing global interest in Kyiv’s drone defence technologies amid rising regional threats.
