Pakistan Reports New Polio Cases, Total Reaches Three in 2026

Pakistan polio cases 2026 have risen to three after the country reported two new infections from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to health officials. The cases were confirmed from Bannu and North Waziristan, raising fresh concerns about virus transmission in high-risk areas.

Officials from the Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme confirmed that the new cases of wild poliovirus were detected through the national surveillance system. These findings were later verified by the WHO-accredited laboratory at the National Institute of Health.

With these new reports, Pakistan polio cases 2026 now include one case previously detected in Sindh and two recent cases from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Health authorities say the situation highlights ongoing challenges in eradicating the virus.

Experts warn that access restrictions in certain regions continue to hinder vaccination efforts. These gaps allow the virus to circulate, posing a serious threat to children under the age of five, who are most vulnerable.

Officials also noted that rising temperatures could accelerate virus transmission. Normally, the high transmission season begins in late May, but this year it may start earlier due to unusual weather patterns.

Pakistan polio cases 2026 remain a major public health concern as polio has no cure and can only be prevented through repeated doses of the oral polio vaccine and routine immunization.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are currently the only two countries where polio is still endemic. The World Health Organization continues to enforce travel restrictions requiring vaccination certificates for international travelers from Pakistan.
