An Indian athlete, Suchika Tariyal, faced Singapore’s Hui Hoon in the 60kg MMA semifinal at the Asian Games, with the bout ending level at the conclusion of the scheduled time.
The result went to the applicable tiebreaking rule, under which the athlete with the lower body weight is declared the winner when the contest remains tied. Hui Hoon was declared the winner after weighing 700 grams less than her Indian opponent.
Tariyal’s camp challenged the decision and sought a review of the result. However, after reviewing the decision, the judges maintained their original ruling and confirmed Hui Hoon as the winner.
Following the decision, Tariyal reportedly declined to shake hands with both her opponent and the referee as a form of protest. The incident drew attention during the competition.
The result was not decided by a score difference at the end of regulation time, as both athletes remained level. The lower-weight rule therefore became decisive in determining which fighter would advance from the semifinal.
According to the rules cited for the competition, body weight can be used as a deciding factor when an MMA bout ends level. In this case, the 700-gram difference proved decisive in favour of the Singaporean athlete.
Hui Hoon consequently advanced after the semifinal decision, while Tariyal’s challenge did not change the result. The incident highlighted the importance of competition rules governing tied bouts and the procedures available to athletes seeking a review.
