QUETTA: Students in a large number of schools across Balochistan are still attending classes while sitting on mats, highlighting the shortage of basic furniture in educational institutions across the province.
Chief Minister Balochistan Sarfraz Bugti had announced measures to end the traditional “mat culture” in schools and directed that desks be provided within three months. However, the deadline has passed without the promised facilities being delivered to schools.
The continued shortage of desks has left many students studying in uncomfortable conditions. In several schools, children have no option but to sit on mats placed on classroom floors during lessons.
The government’s announcement had raised expectations among students, parents and teachers that the longstanding shortage of classroom furniture would soon be addressed. However, implementation of the plan has yet to take place.
Director Schools Akhtar Khetran said that a summary regarding the provision of desks has been submitted to the provincial government. He explained that the desks would be supplied to schools once the required funds are released.
According to the education authorities, financial resources are essential for implementing the desk distribution plan across schools. The release of funds will determine when the furniture can be purchased and delivered to educational institutions.
