ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has strongly opposed the reported imposition of an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), calling it a serious political mistake and urging the federal government to reconsider its decision.
In his statement, Barrister Gohar said the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would not accept measures that undermined their democratic and constitutional rights. He stressed that the province’s electoral mandate must be respected and that decisions affecting its political future should remain within the constitutional framework.
The PTI chairman argued that lasting peace could not be achieved by weakening provincial autonomy. He warned that continued confrontation between the federal and provincial governments would deepen political divisions rather than resolve the country’s challenges.
Gohar said there was no disagreement over the need to eliminate terrorism, but maintained that counterterrorism efforts should not be used to suppress public voices or undermine democratic rights. He emphasised that national unity and cooperation between institutions were essential to tackling the security threat.
PTI Calls for Dialogue Over KP Emergency
The PTI chairman said Pakistan’s problems could be addressed by upholding the Constitution rather than relying on force. He called on the federal government and provincial leadership to engage in meaningful negotiations to resolve their differences and develop a coordinated approach to security and governance.
Gohar also said PTI would raise the issue at every constitutional forum to protect democratic rights. He urged the federal government to set aside political differences and consider what he described as the legitimate demands of the province’s people.
