China Railway Sets New Passenger Record on May Day 2026

China’s railway system achieved a historic milestone as the China railway passenger record May Day 2026 reached an all-time high during the Labour Day holiday period. On May 1 alone, the network transported 24.8 million passengers nationwide.

The surge in travel reflects strong holiday mobility across the country, as millions of citizens moved between cities for tourism, family visits, and leisure activities during the extended break.

According to data released by the China State Railway Group, the railway system is expected to handle around 19.7 million additional passengers on May 2, indicating sustained high demand.

To manage the overwhelming passenger flow, several regional rail lines increased train frequency. The Zhengzhou route added 140 extra passenger trains, while the Chengdu network introduced 184 additional services.

Major cities such as Shanghai and Hangzhou also witnessed heavy passenger movement, highlighting the importance of rail transport in connecting urban centers during peak travel seasons.

The China railway passenger record May Day 2026 underscores the growing strength of domestic tourism, which continues to play a key role in supporting China’s internal demand amid broader economic challenges.

Officials noted that the expanded rail services helped maintain smooth operations despite record-breaking demand, demonstrating improvements in infrastructure capacity and transport efficiency across the national network.
