Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin during the upcoming Pezeshkian Putin meeting at a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan. The summit is scheduled to take place next Tuesday in Bishkek.
Iranian state media reported that Pezeshkian will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit as part of Tehran’s diplomatic engagement with regional partners. The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss bilateral and regional developments.
Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, confirmed Pezeshkian’s planned participation in the summit. He said the Iranian president would hold his sixth meeting with Putin during the event, according to Iran’s official IRNA news agency.
The upcoming Pezeshkian Putin meeting comes as relations between Iran and Russia remain important for both countries. Tehran and Moscow have maintained close diplomatic contacts and regularly discuss security, economic cooperation and developments in the wider region.
The summit will bring together leaders and representatives from countries belonging to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. The grouping provides a platform for member states to discuss regional security, economic ties and cooperation on shared challenges.
Pezeshkian’s meeting with Putin is also expected to attract attention because of ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States. The Iranian president’s participation could give Tehran another opportunity to coordinate with Moscow on regional developments.
The Pezeshkian Putin meeting in Bishkek will therefore be closely watched for any indications of stronger Iran-Russia coordination. Officials have not yet provided details about the specific issues expected to dominate the leaders’ discussions.
