Japan has agreed to provide Pakistan a $16.4 million flood protection grant to strengthen infrastructure in flood-prone areas of Sindh. The project will focus on improving the Old Abad Bund in Larkana along the right bank of the Indus River.
The agreement was signed during a ceremony between the governments of Pakistan and Japan on Monday. Officials exchanged the Exchange of Notes, Record of Discussion and Grant Agreement for a project aimed at improving flood protection and strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities in Sindh.
Muhammad Humair Karim Kidwai, Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, signed the documents on behalf of Pakistan. Japan’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Akamatsu Shuichi, signed and exchanged the agreements on behalf of the Japanese government.
Under the agreement, Japan will provide a grant of JPY 2.58 billion, equivalent to around $16.4 million. The funding will support the improvement and strengthening of the Old Abad Bund in Larkana, an important flood protection structure along the Indus River.
The Japan flood protection grant is intended to strengthen Pakistan’s ability to deal with flooding in vulnerable areas. The project will improve existing protection infrastructure and help communities in Sindh become more resilient to future flood risks.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Economic Affairs Ministry secretary thanked Japan and its people for their continued support and development assistance. He also highlighted Japan’s longstanding role as a development partner and appreciated the technical expertise provided by JICA.
Akamatsu Shuichi reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to working closely with Pakistan and strengthening bilateral cooperation. JICA senior representative Sugawara Takayuki also welcomed the project and said the agency remains committed to supporting flood protection infrastructure in flood-prone areas of Sindh.
