Mamdani Urges King Charles to Return Koh-i-Noor Diamond

Koh-i-Noor diamond return debate resurfaced after Zohran Mamdani suggested that Britain’s monarch should consider returning the historic gemstone to its country of origin. His remarks came during the visit of King Charles III to the United States.

Speaking at a press briefing, Mamdani said that if he had the opportunity to speak directly with the King, he would encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond. His comments quickly drew attention due to the long-standing historical and political sensitivity surrounding the jewel.

The Koh-i-Noor diamond return issue has been debated for decades, with India repeatedly requesting its repatriation. The diamond is widely viewed in India as a cultural treasure taken during the colonial era.

The gemstone was transferred to British possession in the 19th century after the annexation of Punjab. It was later presented to Queen Victoria, and today it remains part of the British Crown Jewels collection.

During his visit, King Charles also attended a ceremony in New York commemorating victims of the September 11 attacks. The meeting with Mamdani took place on the sidelines of the event, though it is unclear whether the diamond issue was discussed directly.

Buckingham Palace did not comment on Mamdani’s statement, and his office also remained silent on whether the matter was raised during the interaction. This has left public curiosity surrounding the exchange.

The renewed discussion over Koh-i-Noor diamond return highlights ongoing global debates about colonial-era artifacts and their ownership. Experts say such issues continue to shape diplomatic and cultural relations between nations.
