A major Moscow drone attack struck Russia’s Moscow region overnight on October 6, with authorities reporting extensive damage to residential areas and an oil storage facility. Regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov said the assault was among the largest drone attacks recorded in the area.
Vorobyov said around 185 drones were reportedly shot down over the Moscow region during the overnight attack. He reported that two people were killed and nine others were injured as a result of the assault.
The governor said private houses and apartment buildings were damaged in several settlements across the region. Emergency services were deployed to affected areas as authorities assessed the damage caused by the large-scale drone attack.
Videos shared by witnesses showed the aftermath near the Volodarskaya oil depot in the Ramenskoye district. Images and footage reportedly showed damage in the vicinity of the facility following the overnight attack.
Industry sources have described the Volodarskaya facility as the largest oil storage depot in the Moscow region. The site stores automotive gasoline, aviation fuel and diesel, with its supplies capable of serving fuel demand in Moscow.
The Moscow drone attack comes amid the continuing war in Ukraine, where drones have increasingly been used against military, energy and other infrastructure targets. The latest incident has again raised security concerns around critical facilities in the Russian capital region.
Authorities have not provided further details on the origin of all the drones or the full extent of damage to the oil facility. The reported casualties and infrastructure damage are being assessed as emergency teams continue operations in the affected areas.
