Pakistan EV transition has gained momentum after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed authorities to gradually shift the country’s transport system to electric vehicles. The decision was announced during a high-level meeting on energy security held in Islamabad on Thursday.
The prime minister emphasized that energy security is now a critical component of Pakistan’s long-term planning. He noted that global uncertainties and rising fuel costs have made it necessary to adopt sustainable and cost-effective alternatives such as electric mobility.
Officials briefed the meeting that Pakistan has managed to avoid a major energy crisis due to timely government interventions. However, the need to reduce reliance on imported fuel remains a top priority for economic stability and future resilience.
As part of the Pakistan EV transition, the government plans to introduce electric buses and motorcycles for official use. Authorities have also been instructed to speed up the installation of EV charging stations across the country to support this shift.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of battery storage solutions, particularly for solar energy users. A framework is being developed to facilitate battery acquisition, while local production of high-quality batteries is expected to be encouraged.
In addition, two grid-level battery storage pilot projects are currently in the planning phase. These initiatives aim to strengthen Pakistan’s energy infrastructure and ensure efficient use of renewable energy resources.
Experts believe that the Pakistan EV transition could significantly reduce the fuel import bill, promote environmental sustainability, and create new economic opportunities. However, challenges such as infrastructure gaps and high initial costs will need careful management.
