The Supreme Court has registered PTI’s contempt petition concerning Imran Khan hospital transfer after the party removed objections raised by the registrar’s office. The petition has been assigned Case No. 8/2026 and can now proceed before the top court. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan had earlier said the party would resubmit the petition after addressing the procedural issues.
The petition was filed by Imran Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, and challenges the authorities’ decision to move the PTI founder to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). The Supreme Court had directed his transfer to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for a medical examination. Authorities instead took him to PIMS, citing security concerns.
The registrar’s office had initially returned the petition after identifying procedural objections. Gohar said one objection concerned the failure to provide the alleged contemnors with a list of allegations. The PTI chairman said the party also requested an early hearing and would submit the petition again once the objections were addressed.
The latest development clears the procedural hurdle for the Imran Khan hospital transfer case. PTI lawyers have alleged that authorities failed to comply with the Supreme Court’s directions concerning his medical examination. The petition names Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar as respondents.
The government has defended the decision to take Imran Khan to PIMS rather than Shifa International Hospital. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said security considerations influenced the decision, including concerns about the route to the private hospital and the presence of PTI supporters outside the facility.
Officials have also rejected claims of medical negligence or inhumane treatment in custody. The government says Imran Khan has access to medical and legal facilities and has been examined by multiple medical boards. Doctors from Shifa International Hospital were also present during his medical examination at PIMS, according to the government.
Uzma Khan has said her brother’s physical condition has improved while expressing concerns about the conditions he faces in jail. PTI has said it will continue pursuing the matter through legal channels. With the objections removed and the petition registered, the Supreme Court can now take up the Imran Khan hospital transfer case.
