The agricultural sector in Punjab is beginning to witness the positive impact of reforms and farmer-focused policies introduced by the provincial government. Through the expansion of modern farming equipment and financial support programs, the province is moving toward a new era of agricultural mechanization aimed at increasing productivity and improving farmers’ livelihoods.
A major component of this transformation is the Green Tractor Scheme launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Under the current phase of the program, subsidies of Rs1 million per tractor are being provided for 9,500 high-powered tractors. In addition, 10,000 tractors ranging from 50 to 65 horsepower are being offered to farmers with a subsidy of Rs500,000 each.
The chief minister has also directed authorities to distribute 20,000 Green Tractors during the next fiscal year. The expanded initiative is expected to significantly improve access to modern agricultural machinery across Punjab, particularly for small and medium-sized farmers.
Under the upcoming budget, subsidies will be further increased. Farmers purchasing high-horsepower tractors will be eligible for subsidies of Rs1.5 million, while those acquiring 50 to 65 horsepower tractors will receive financial assistance of Rs750,000. The enhanced support is designed to reduce production costs and encourage the adoption of modern farming practices.
For the first time in Punjab’s history, an interest-free loan scheme of up to Rs30 million has been introduced for the purchase of 12 categories of advanced agricultural machinery. The initiative enables farmers to acquire modern equipment through accessible financing options, helping them upgrade their farming operations without significant financial burdens.
Government officials report that nearly 200 high-tech combine harvesters have already been provided through interest-free financing programs. In addition, 50 modern combine harvesters were utilized during the recent wheat harvesting season, contributing to more efficient and timely crop collection across various districts.
Punjab has also taken steps to address environmental concerns linked to crop residue burning. The government distributed 5,000 Super Seeders among rice farmers, enabling cultivation on approximately 1.4 million acres using modern seeding technology. Following the positive results, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the distribution of another 5,000 Super Seeders. Officials believe that increased mechanization, improved access to equipment, and environmentally friendly technologies will strengthen agricultural productivity while promoting sustainable farming practices throughout the province.
